So….It’s Men’s Health Week
My first Blog!
It was going to be about Nutrition…… Boring right!?
Well, quality Nutrition has changed my Life. For the better. So it’s coming!
But this week coincides with Men’s Health Week, so I thought I would share a little of my own journey, seeing I am a man, who is reclaiming my health.
You see, I would Love this Blog to be a resource for people to use on there own journey towards reclaiming there health.
As now I believe I have found my purpose. To Lead and Inspire People to Reach their Full Potential, Through Health and Fitness.
But I want every one to know that it wasn’t always that way.
I don’t pretend to know it all.
In fact the only reason I know anything about quality nutrition now is because I F’d it up fro the first 33 years of my Life until I discovered I was pre diabetic.
The only Reason I know anything about building strength and regaining mobility is because I F’d it up for the first 33 years of my life, by not doing any at all, and ending up Bed ridden with back pain and couldn’t get close to touching my toe’s.
The only reason I know anything about Stress Management, Breath work and Mindfulness, is because I F’d it up for the first 33 years of my life to the point of suffering self imposed anxiety which also impacted my health in a negative fashion.
And the only reason I know anything about Mindset, Self Acceptance and finally have a deeper level of self awareness is because I had zero self awareness and was as insecure A.F. for the first 33 years of my life, I judged myself and I judged every person who came into my life because I felt threatened by them.
I am happy to say all of those things have changed for the better! 😍
It was a long process for me to figure all this out. A lot of work. A lot of questions. Not so many answers.
What does set me apart is a new found thirst for knowledge. For Growth.
And I will share with you the answers.
I’m just a guy trying to do his best.
I don’t need to compare myself to anyone else.
Now I know progression, is just about being a little bit better than I used to be. No one else.
And that means accepting failures as part of the journey.
I will continue to Fail. But now I look for and am willing to Learn the lessons.
If I can do this, you can too.
What I do know now is a lot of the things we need to do to become Healthy Men (and Women!) are actually very simple!
Our lives are more routined than ever today, and we quite often live out of convenience.
The world and our General Lifestyles are not geared for optimal performance.
But all is not lost! With a few simple tweaks you can move forward too!
MENS HEALTH WEEK
So this week is Men’s Health week.
It got me thinking, Are we Men? And are we Healthy?
I spent the first 33 years of my life trying to fit in. Trying to be an Aussie “Man”.
Lot’s of Drinking, Drugs (yes it’s true), no emotion, no empathy, no day’s off, no sign’s of “weakness”
I lived life at a million miles an hour always chasing that next thing. The next material possession that would most certainly bring me happiness…. But alas I felt empty.
For some reason, unbeknowns to me I had always since I can remember, felt like I wasn’t enough.Like I wasn’t good looking enough, or smart enough. Felt like I wasn’t achieving enough, and that I wasn’t good enough. At anything.
I attended a Mens retreat last year,with 20 other Men.
There was a common thread among most of us, we discovered in deep conversation, Real conversation, that we felt as though we weren’t living up to expectations.
The expectation of self.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN?
A good question right? For years I thought it was about how many beers I could drink on a saturday night at the pub.
That’s sadly the honest truth.
Now you may not agree here but I believe the stereo typical “Aussie Man” I was trying to aspire to was built on a sub conscious desire to conform to social norms.
Our Culture as Aussie Men, is not aligned with Health.
It is quite often accepted that as we age we will put on weight, become immobile and less active all whilst acquiring every toy under the sun which we won’t be able to use anyway when we are laid up at the age of 50.
And then there is this….
We are Men.
These statistics are not Healthy.
I believe we can make a change.
I believe we can do better.
It doesn’t take much to be better than the average statistics.
It begins with me and it begins with you.
Leading by example.
Actually embracing our health, emotion, empathy, compassion, all as signs of strength and not weakness.
And living our life in alignment with our own true values. Not anyone else’s. Not societies.
As Men, Mates and Dads we are role models.
Growing up I never thought I was a role model or someone anyone else would look up to.
I didn’t value myself.
When I became a Dad, I had no choice. I knew what my job was then. I had two little men to lead.
So I got to work.
Its been a long road…. Its really just beginning.
12 Months ago I couldn’t have written this.
I was still ashamed of who I used to be and things I had done.
I wasn’t aware that every one of those things I was trying to hide, were actually turning points in my life that led me exactly to where I am right now.
They made me who I am.
10 months ago I fully accepted myself.
It’s my story.
Now I am writing my script.
I am the Hero in my own journey.
I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
4 SIMPLE TIPS THAT MAY HELP YOU
For now if you are an Aussie Man,in Men’s Health week (or woman for that matter:)) here are my 4 health tips to help you get started if you are stuck in a rut
- Define Your Outcome! Is your current trajectory taking you where you want to go? Change it, or you’ll blink and another 12 months or 5 years will be gone! Remember, Mindset 101, what you focus on is what you get so don’t focus on what you don’t want which you already have. Nothing is impossible, just not probable if you don’t prioritize it. Write down what YOU do want and get after it!
- Gratitude is the most fulfilling emotion we can experience. It also produces DHEA in the body (Reduces Stress) here Get yourself a journal and write down 3 things each day you are Grateful for or things that went well in your day. Try not to think of material items here. Think moments, kiss from your kids or wife or partner, sun on your face, the air we breathe, shit we take for granted all to often.
- Move Everyday. Do something you enjoy every day. Move. Run. Ride. Play. Laugh. Yoga. Gym. Make it a priority. Even if it’s only 15 minutes.
- Throw your breakfast cereal in the bin. Breakfast is just another meal. It doesn’t need to be Nutrient deficient, sugar laden cereal from a box like we have been conditioned to believe. Simply switching up breakfast to something that looks more like dinner, Protein Source, Green Veg or Salad with a Serve of Healthy Fats, has changed mine and many of my clients, energy levels, focus and hunger throughout the day, not to mention their health and longevity, and in my opinion would go a long way to aleviating a lot of the worlds Health problems right there.
4 simple things you can implement to move forward with your Health.
Remember, at the start you don’t need to change everything at once. Pick one thing. One obvious thing you know you need to change. Make it a habit, then move on to the next.
If you are like me, it took the first 33 years of our life to acquire all those bad habits, it will take longer than two weeks to change them!
Be kind to yourself and wipe the slate clean each new day, and go again!
And here is a bonus tip > Don’t be afraid to ask for help! I tried it on my own for a long time and it’s tough.
Their are many people out there willing to share their knowledge, lot’s of amazing books to read, on whatever it is you may need help with.
I have my own personal Coach and Mentor to educate me and keep me accountable. It’s the most valuable hour of my week I spend!
